Equana Minds is an online psychology and therapy practice founded on lived experience, allowing everyone to explore therapy in the language that helps them the most.

Every year, almost 1 in 5 people living in Australia experience a mental health condition.
At the same time, nearly 1 in 4 speak a language other than English at home.
Millions of people are navigating mental health challenges across a language gap.
Our Purpose
Equana Minds exists to bridge that gap, to make therapy accessible, meaningful and empowering. We are doing this by matching people with therapists who share their language and culture, helping everyone access the support they need to thrive.

Our Story
Our co-founder Giulia, an Italian migrant, found that therapy in Australia only truly worked when she connected with a psychologist who spoke her language and understood her background.
Our co-founder Matt saw the same pattern as he navigated his own mental health journey. Seeing person after person struggling to access support, not because it didn’t exist, but because the bridge to their clinician was missing.
Two experiences. One shared mission. Equana Minds was founded because effective mental health support starts with feeling genuinely understood. Therapy that speaks your language and connects with your culture.
Meet the Founders
Matt Peterson
Matt co-founded Equana Minds following his own experiences of mental health support, while at the same time seeing many multilingual individuals facing accessibility barriers. With a background in industrial chemistry and technology leadership, Matt drives Equana Minds’ vision and strategic direction. His strengths lie in translating ideas into practical solutions, passionate about building a therapy platform to serve Australia’s diverse communities.
Giulia Oss
Giulia co-founded Equana Minds after experiencing firsthand how difficult it can be to access mental health support in her own language. With a background in pharmacy and health and safety, and having migrated to Australia from Italy in 2016, she brings a strong personal connection to Equana Minds’ mission of culturally attuned, language-inclusive therapy. Giulia is driven by a desire to create a space where clients feel understood, respected, and supported, both linguistically and culturally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who founded Equana Minds, and why?
Equana Minds was co-founded by Giulia and Matt, who’s personal experiences formed the drive behind Equana Minds, which was built because too many people across Australia have sat in therapy rooms (or Zoom rooms) trying to translate not just their words, but their entire world.
Where does the name “Equana Minds” come from?
It comes from equanimity – the calm, grounded sense of self that good therapy can help cultivate. We wanted a name that pointed toward the outcome our clients are seeking.
Why is it helpful to have therapy in your native language?
Many people find it easier to express thoughts, emotions, and personal experiences in their native language. Language is closely connected to culture, identity, and the way we understand the world.
When therapy is delivered in a language you feel comfortable with, it can:
- Help you explain your feelings more naturally
- Build a stronger connection with your therapist
- Reduce potential misunderstandings
- Make the process feel safer and more personal
For many people, speaking in their native language allows therapy to feel more natural, meaningful, and helpful.
How do you select your registered therapists?
Every therapist on our platform is fully registered with the relevant Australian body – AHPRA for psychologists, ACA or PACFA for counsellors and psychotherapists, and AASW for accredited mental health social workers. Beyond credentials, we look for therapists whose lived experience and cultural fluency genuinely match the communities they serve. More on our standards is on the Join Us page.
What makes Equana Minds different from other telehealth platforms?
Most Australian telehealth platforms treat language and culture as a “filter”, a tick-box on a search page. We’ve built the entire platform around the premise that cultural and linguistic match isn’t a nice-to-have; it’s clinically meaningful.
