Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many Medicare-rebated sessions can I access?

Under Medicare’s Better Access scheme, you can access up to 10 individual therapy sessions per calendar year with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and referral. Your GP will typically refer you for an initial 6 sessions, and after a review, can refer you for a further 4.

  • Which Equana therapists are eligible for Medicare rebates?

Medicare rebates apply to sessions with registered psychologists, clinical psychologists, and accredited mental health social workers. Counsellors and psychotherapists are not covered under Medicare. When browsing therapists, you can filter by funding pathway to find clinicians eligible for Medicare rebates.

  • What if I don’t have a GP or want to start without a referral?

You don’t need a GP referral to book with Equana Minds, you can pay privately at any time. If you’d like to access Medicare rebates down the track, you can see a GP at any point to get a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and apply it from your next eligible session. Our team can help point you in the right direction if you’re unsure.

  • How do I actually claim my Medicare rebate?

Equana Minds will handle the processing of your Medicare rebate for you.  After each session the rebate will be deposited into your nominated bank account, registered with Medicare, within a few business days.
