What to expect in a session

Sessions are relaxed, confidential and guided by evidence-based or recognised therapeutic approaches.

You’re welcome to talk about how you’re feeling, what’s been happening and what you hope to work on. Your therapist will get to know you, listen and support you at your own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What types of therapists do you offer?

We offer four types of therapists:

    • Registered psychologists,
    • Clinical psychologists,
    • Counsellors and psychotherapists,
    • Accredited mental health social workers.

Each has different training, scope, and fee structures. We’ll match you based on what you’re working through and which funding pathway (eg Medicare, private health insurance) you’re using.

  • What session formats are available?

A standard individual session is 50-minutes. A couples session is 80 minutes. For individual therapy, you can also choose a short one-off introductory session (20 minutes), if you want to meet a therapist and check fit.

All sessions are conducted online via secure Telehealth.

  • How does Get Matched work?

When choosing our Get Matched function, you tell us your preferred language then answer a few questions about yourself, what brings you to therapy and your therapy needs. We provide you with recommended therapists, based on your answers. You can then book your first session from your preferred therapist’s profile.

  • Can I choose my own therapist?

Yes, you can choose your own therapist! You can browse our therapists and filter by language, therapist types, what you need support with and more. Head to Browse Therapist to find the right therapist for you.

  • What if my first therapist isn’t the right fit?

If after your first session with your matched therapist you feel they’re not the right therapist for you, you are welcome to book with another Equana Minds therapist. If you are unsure, please get in touch. Fit matters too much to force it.

  • How do Medicare rebates work for therapy?

If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP, you are eligible for a Medicare rebate for sessions with eligible therapists (psychologists, clinical psychologists, and accredited mental health social workers). The rebate covers a portion of the session fee, and you pay the gap fee. Equana Minds processes the claim for you, after the session, and the rebate is deposited directly into your nominated bank account. Counsellors and psychotherapists aren’t covered by Medicare but are often covered by private health extras. Full breakdown on Rebates page.

  • Can I claim a private health insurance rebate for my session?

Many of our therapists are recognised by major private health funds for extras-cover rebates. The exact rebate depends on your fund and level of cover and we recommend checking with your insurer directly. We provide all the receipts and item numbers you need to claim.

  • Are sessions confidential?

Yes. All Equana Minds therapists are bound by Australian professional confidentiality standards, and we use secure, encrypted video for sessions. There are a small number of legal exceptions to confidentiality (e.g. risk of harm) which your therapist will explain in your first session.

  • How do I book a session?

Head to our Browse Therapist page or Get Matched to find the right therapist for you. You can book a session from their individual profile page.
